When you first begin Training your Doberman to Come call your him to come to you for food. Do this even if your dog is right beside you, it will help the ‘come’ command to be associated with nice things. Once your dobie comes, make him sit and wait before allowing him to feed.
The next step in training a Doberman is to call him to you when you are inside. Make your dog sit and then praise him. Start with very short distances at first then increase gradually to longer distance. Once your dobie is doing this well, move outside and then start calling him when you are out of sight. Again increase distance. Once your dog comes every time you call, move to a park and train there, again starting with short distances.
If you have called your dobie and he has not come to you do not continue to call. If you continue then you are actually training your Doberman to ignore and disobey you. Walk away and sit somewhere else ignoring him. If this happens at the park go and sit in the car. Dobermans hate to be ignored and they will eventually seek your attention. When he finally comes up to you, continue ignoring him.
After a short time while he is still close call him and praise him when he comes to you. If your dog ignores this second command, get up and walk away again and repeat the procedure.
Remember consistency is key and to keep your Doberman training sessions short, fun and enjoyable for all.
This should be a fun time for both of you so keep it light and if you get frustrated stop, take a break. Throw a ball or maybe call it a day. You want your buddy to come back to your next Doberman training session excited and ready to learn.
